EV plugs and standards: CCS2, Type 2 and CHAdeMO
In Europe there are two plugs you need to know. Almost all new electric cars have both.
Type 2 for AC
Type 2 is used on home chargers and street chargers. Home chargers often have a tethered cable. Street chargers often only have a socket, so you need to bring your own Type 2 cable. Most cars come with one.
CCS2 for rapid charging
CCS2 is the standard for rapid charging in Europe. It is a Type 2 plug with two large extra pins for direct current. The cable is always attached to the rapid charger.
CHAdeMO
The Nissan Leaf before 2026 and a few older cars use CHAdeMO for rapid charging. There are few CHAdeMO chargers, and many operators do not state the plug type in their data. If your car has CHAdeMO, Elmer only plans with chargers that state it. The new Leaf from 2026 has CCS2.
