How to look after your EV battery
The batteries in new electric cars last a long time, often as long as the car. A few good habits help them along.
Everyday: 20–80%
Most batteries (NMC) are happiest between 20 and 80%. Set the charge limit to 80% for everyday use. Charge to 100% when you are going on a long trip, ideally just before you leave.
LFP batteries are different
LFP batteries can handle being charged to 100%. Several manufacturers recommend doing so at least once a week, so the car can show the correct percentage. Check the car's manual to see which battery type you have.
Rapid charging
Rapid charging wears the battery a little more than AC, especially when the battery is very hot or cold. New batteries handle it fine, and the car protects the battery itself by turning down the power. For everyday use, charging on AC at home is gentlest.
