Why does EV charging slow down? The charging curve

A 300 kW rapid charger does not mean the car charges at 300 kW. The car decides.

The charging curve

The car controls the power based on the battery percentage and how warm the battery is. Full power typically lasts until around 50%. Then it drops. At 80% it is often halved, and the last few percent are very slow.

The charger and the car

The car never charges faster than both the charger and the car can handle. A 350 kW charger only helps if your car can take that much. A car that takes at most 100 kW charges just as fast on a 150 kW charger as on a 350 kW one. So choose by price.

Cold weather

A cold battery accepts less power. Navigate to the charger using the car's own navigation. In many cars, the battery is then warmed up automatically.

Good advice

Arrive at the rapid charger with a low battery, e.g. 10–20%. That is when it charges fastest.
Stop at 80% on trips.
Choose your car in the Elmer app. Then the route planner calculates charging time for it.
